Where the rug goes

Placement is the part that decides whether a correctly sized rug looks right. Four rooms, four sets of distances, each drawn rather than described.

Living room

There are three workable arrangements and one that is usually a mistake.

All legs on. Every piece of seating sits entirely on the rug. It is the most generous look and it needs the most rug: for a standard three seat sofa with two chairs facing, that is 8 by 10 at the least and often 9 by 12. It suits a room where the seating group sits away from the walls.

Front legs on. The front legs of the sofa and each chair land on the rug, the back legs sit on the floor. This is the workhorse arrangement, it ties the group together, and it usually lands on 6 by 9 or 8 by 10. Aim for the rug to run at least the full width of the sofa plus a foot at each end.

Floating. A small rug centred under the coffee table with no furniture touching it. This works only if it looks intentional, which means the rug should be clearly smaller than the seating group rather than nearly as big. 4 by 6 and 5 by 7 do this well.

The mistake is a rug that is almost big enough: 5 by 7 in front of a full sized sofa, close to the furniture but touching none of it. Nothing looks anchored and the room reads as smaller.

Bedroom

The measurement that matters is how far the rug reaches out from the sides of the bed, because that is where your feet land. Eighteen inches is the working minimum; 24 is comfortable.

Two arrangements are common. The rug can start below the bedside tables and run out past the foot of the bed, which puts warm floor where you step out and needs roughly 8 by 10 for a queen and 9 by 12 for a king. Or a pair of runners can go down each side, which is cheaper, easier to wash, and works well in a room too narrow for a rug that reaches under the bed. The 2 by 6 and 2 foot 7 by 8 runners in this range are the usual sizes for that.

Dining room

One rule governs the whole room: a chair pulled back from the table should still have all four legs on the rug. Pull a chair out as far as you actually sit and measure from the table edge to the back legs. On most dining chairs that is 20 to 24 inches.

Add that distance to every side of the table and you have your minimum rug. A six seat table of 36 by 72 inches wants roughly 7 by 10 of rug, which in this range means 8 by 10. A round table of 48 inches wants about 8 feet across, which is the 6 foot round only if the chairs are unusually compact; more often it means a rectangle.

A rug in a dining room takes more abuse than anywhere else in the house, which is the one place where the washability of this range earns its keep. It is also the room where you should check the size against the washer fit table before buying, because the sizes a dining table needs are the sizes that stop fitting in a domestic drum.

Hall, kitchen and entry

A runner should leave a few inches of floor at each side rather than reaching wall to wall; a runner wedged tight to both skirtings buckles as soon as it is walked on. In a hallway, leave 4 to 6 inches at the sides and stop the runner short of any door that swings inward.

In a galley kitchen, the useful length is the working run: sink to hob, or sink to fridge. A 2 by 6 covers a short run and a 2 by 10 covers most full galleys. Kitchens are where a rug meets the most water and the most dropped food, and where a rug you can lift and wash beats a rug you cannot.

In an entry, the rug takes grit from outside, which is abrasive and does more damage than dirt. A doormat sized rug that gets shaken out weekly and washed monthly will outlast the same rug left to grind.
